The Short Answer

If you have three days and want the classic image of golden dunes, choose Merzouga. If you only have two days and mostly want a night in a desert camp and the drive through the Atlas, choose Zagora.

Dunes

Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, a sea of tall orange dunes that is the image most people have of the Sahara. The dunes near Zagora are small and patchy, often mixed with rocky desert. This is the single biggest difference between the two trips.

Time and Driving

  • Merzouga: about 550 km from Marrakech, 9 to 10 hours of driving each way. The shortest round trip is three days, around 20 hours in the vehicle.
  • Zagora: about 360 km, roughly 6 to 7 hours each way. A two-day trip means 12 to 14 hours of driving for one night.

Cost

Shared tours to both are inexpensive by international standards, and a 3-day Merzouga tour typically costs more than a 2-day Zagora trip because of the extra day and hotel night. Compare live prices for your dates on the tour cards below.

Camps and Crowds

Merzouga has the widest range of camps, from basic to luxury tents, and it is busy in peak season. Zagora camps are generally simpler. If you want neither crowds nor the long Merzouga drive, consider Erg Chegaga, which is remote but takes longer to reach.

Who Should Pick Which

  • Pick Merzouga if this is your one chance to see the Sahara, you have three days or more, and you want tall dunes and a choice of camps.
  • Pick Zagora if you have exactly two days, the camp night and the Atlas drive matter more than the size of the dunes, or you are combining the trip with other plans in the south.
  • Pick neither if you have a single free day. An Agafay evening or an Aït Benhaddou day trip fits better.
