The Route, Day by Day
Almost every 3-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga follows the same outline. The stops vary a little between operators.
- Day 1: over the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a stop at the earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou, then on through Ouarzazate to a hotel in the Dades Valley or near the Todra Gorge.
- Day 2: a walk in the Todra Gorge, then the drive to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes and spend the night at a desert camp with dinner.
- Day 3: sunrise over the dunes, the camel ride back, breakfast, then the long drive back to Marrakech, usually arriving in the evening.
The Honest Trade-Off: Driving Time
Merzouga is roughly 550 km from Marrakech, and the return on day three is usually the longest day of the trip. Expect around 20 hours in the vehicle across the three days, broken up by photo stops, lunch and the Aït Benhaddou and Todra visits.
If that sounds like too much, you have three alternatives: add a day with a 4-day tour, end in Fes instead of returning with the Marrakech to Fes route, or accept smaller dunes on a 2-day Zagora trip.
The Desert Camp Night
You usually reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, leave your main luggage in the vehicle and ride into the dunes as the light softens. At camp there is typically mint tea, then dinner, often a tagine, followed by music around a fire. Away from any town, the night sky is one of the highlights of the trip.
Mornings start early: most groups climb a dune for sunrise before riding back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Standard camps are simple, with shared toilets and showers. If comfort matters, check whether your tour offers an upgrade to a tent with a private bathroom.

What Is Usually Included (and What Isn't)
Shared 3-day tours generally include transport, the hotel night, the desert-camp night, dinner and breakfast both nights, and the camel ride. They often leave out lunches, drinks, entry fees for optional guides at Aït Benhaddou or the Todra Gorge, and tips. Each listing's inclusions are the final word, and we summarize the decision-relevant ones on each card.
How to Choose Between Shared Tours
- Group size: a listed maximum of 8 to 15 feels very different from 17 or more on a minibus.
- Camp level: standard camps usually have shared toilets and showers; some tours offer an upgrade to a tent with a private bathroom. See luxury desert camps.
- Pickup: cars cannot reach many riads inside the medina, so pickup is often at the nearest square or car park. Confirm the meeting point the day before.
- Review volume: thousands of reviews at 4.7 or more is a stronger signal than a perfect score from a handful.
Costs Beyond the Tour Price
Budget a little cash in dirhams for the things shared tours usually leave out:
- Lunch on each of the three days, plus drinks
- Optional local guides at Aït Benhaddou or in the Todra Gorge
- Tips for your driver and camel handler
- Small extras such as toilets at roadside stops
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Book a 3-Day Tour
Good fit: first-time visitors with three spare days who want the classic dunes, a camel ride and a night in camp, and who are comfortable with long days on the road.
Think twice: travelers prone to car sickness, families with very young children, or anyone flying out the morning after. A private tour or a 4-day route makes the same trip easier.
