What You See
Aït Benhaddou is a fortified village of earthen buildings climbing a hillside above a river, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1987. It has appeared in many films and television series, which is part of its fame.
Day trips usually include the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass with photo stops, time to explore the ksar, and sometimes a stop in Ouarzazate, the regional film-studio town.
A Long Day: Plan for It
Expect about four hours each way on a winding mountain road, so the day commonly runs 10 to 12 hours. Leave early, carry water and snacks, and bring motion-sickness tablets if you need them. In winter, snow can occasionally close the pass for a time.
Inside the ksar, the lanes are steep and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes. Some houses are still lived in and some owners charge a small fee to enter; a local guide can be hired at the entrance if your tour does not include one. Carry cash for lunch, which is often not included.
