The Seasons at a Glance
- March to May: warm days, cool nights, peak demand, occasional strong wind.
- June to August: very hot days, warm nights, fewer tour groups.
- September to November: comfortable days, nights cooling through the season.
- December to February: mild, clear days and cold nights, with occasional snow on the Atlas pass.
Spring (March to May)
Warm days and cool nights make spring one of the most comfortable times for a desert trip, which also makes it one of the busiest. Spring can bring strong winds and occasional sandstorms, so keep a scarf in your overnight bag.
Summer (June to August)
Daytime temperatures in the desert often climb above 40°C. Tours still run, and nights are warm, but the long drives and midday heat are hard work. If summer is your only option, choose a vehicle with good air-conditioning, drink plenty of water and plan activities for early morning and evening.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn brings the same comfortable balance as spring, with the summer heat fading through September. Nights grow noticeably colder by November.
Winter (December to February)
Days are often clear and mild, but desert nights can drop to around freezing, so a warm layer and a camp with good blankets matter. Snow can occasionally close the Tizi n'Tichka pass for a time. A luxury camp with heating or extra bedding makes winter much more comfortable.
Ramadan and Holidays
Desert tours run during Ramadan, but some roadside restaurants may close during daylight hours. Around European school holidays and Easter, book well ahead, especially for private tours and luxury camps.
