Why Erg Chegaga
Erg Chegaga is a large dune field south of the Draa Valley, far from the nearest town. There are fewer camps than at Merzouga and no road to the dunes, so it feels more remote.
The trade-off is access. You drive to M'Hamid El Ghizlane at the end of the road, then cross rough desert tracks by 4x4 for the final stretch.
How You Get There
From Marrakech, the route crosses the High Atlas, passes Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa Valley through Zagora to M'Hamid. The 4x4 crossing to the dunes takes a couple of hours on unpaved tracks. Because of the distance, most Chegaga trips from Marrakech run three or four days.
